So I will be started a new job in a new city where I am completely new to. My family recently moved when I landed the job and we are not familiar with anyone in the area or anyone I work with. Do you have some advice on making a good first impression?
Be yourself. The worst thing you can do is put on a show for people at work and have them expecting that of you long after you settle in. I actually hated a job because I did that. I was the guy everyone came to for help and I often fell behind on my own work trying to fix everyone else's problems.
Don't go in with expectations. A new job comes with change and if you start comparing it to other jobs or thinking it will be one way all the time, you will end up disappointed. It doesn't matter what field it is, go in it with an open mind.
Don’t start off on the wrong foot by turning up late but don’t show up so early that you make everyone else look bad. Get there at a good time and show people you want the job but you aren’t stepping on anyone’s toes.
Since it is a new area and everything is new to you, I would use this as an advantage. No one knows you here. If you want to be a more outgoing guy or find a new interest, make friends with co-workers you normally wouldn’t, now is it the time.
Don’t stress out too much. Moving is a lot to handle with a family but starting a new job? I would be a mess myself. Just be yourself and everything should work out.
